Land of the Midnight Sun

So I just arrived back home after my two-week trip to Norway. In a word, it was amazing.

Purple Flowers with fjord

For the most part, I stayed in a little cabin my family owns way up in northern Norway, in a town called Burfjord. Because it lies so far past the arctic circle, in the summer the sun doesn’t set. It’s a little hard getting used to going to sleep in daylight, but the breathtaking landscapes are well worth it. Armed with a camera, a journal, and watercolor paints, I was determined to try to capture them.

While in Norway, I started a little travel diary using ink and watercolor. It began as a way of keeping memories for myself that I’d remember more than just pictures. Now that I’ve created quite a few pages, though, I’m considering turning it into a project to share with others 🙂

Painting in Norway

Here’s a few pages from my journal that explain how I arrived and a little of what I did when I got there:

Day 01

Day 02

Day 02 fishing

Day 02 fishing supplies

It was really fun painting with watercolors and trying to improve.

Overall, the experience was one of the best of my life. I had been to Norway a few times before, but I was so young that I hardly remembered it. I can already tell that I’ll remember this trip forever.

Your photos are so lovely~ and I really like your travel diary illustrations! For some reason my favorite page is the one with the different fishing tools…

I liked how the journal entries looked cartoony. I’m currently trying to develop some characters myself, questioning my whole cartoonist being, what was I thinking. You know how it is. I’m going to change it up from my single panel stuff but still be influenced by it.

Thank you, I tried to draw a little differently than before and it ended up being really fun. I know where you’re coming from. I feel like artists are always questioning what they’re doing in order to improve. Your idea seems exciting and I hope you enjoy creating it 🙂

Your photos are pretty but the journal is what I enjoyed the most. And your first oil work is very good. Hang in there, as you’ll get used to it. Question: When you work with acrylics, what mediums are you using to slow down drying time? Just wondering. Interesting blog … I’m exploring today and glad I found this.

Thank you, Cheryl! Sorry it took so long for me to respond, I somehow missed your comment. To answer your question, when I work with acrylics I don’t use any medium to slow down drying time. I didn’t know such a thing existed! Maybe I’ll try it sometime. For now I’ll keep practicing with oils. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
