Hey everyone! In order to motivate myself to experiment and do creative things this summer, I’ve created a bucket list of random activities and goals that I hope to accomplish come September.
1. Start Writing a Novel
This is definitely the biggest goal on my list. I really want to improve my writing, and the only way I know how is by practicing. Plus, I already have a rough idea for a story that is begging to be told!
This goal ties in with one of my biggest life-goals: to be published. I decided to abandon my first novel because I consider it more of a learning experience than a project I want to pursue in the long-term. So I’m going to work on a new project that I can really put my all into for the coming months and- who knows?- years.
2. Paint en Plein Air
Painting “en plein air” basically means painting outside. It’s done in the light of day, with the subject actually in front of you.
This is something that has interested me for a really long time. I haven’t gotten around to trying it, though. This summer I want to learn how to paint outside with oils and hopefully improve my painting skill in general.
3. Read Books
I love reading, but it always seems to be on the bottom of my list of things to-do even when I have free time. I think reading will help me be a better writer as well, so I am making it a top-priority.
4. Practice Watercoloring
I really love the way watercolor paintings look, with their subdued colors and softness. I admire the way some artists can use layers of watercolor to create atmosphere and depth. I’m going to practice watercoloring in order to hopefully learn some of these techniques and improve in general.
5. Develop my Illustration Style
This goal has popped up pretty recently for me. I’ve been drawing for a long, long time, but in the past few years my artistic aims have shifted immeasurably. I started drawing characters and illustrating a few years ago, and now I’d like to begin developing a unique illustration style.
6. Make Zines and Mini-Comics
Zines are something I’ve discovered pretty recently and have fallen in love with. I still don’t quite understand them, but I think they usually feature art, writing, or both in a booklet made of printer paper or any other type of material you can think of. The endless amount of possibilities that come with zines really excite me!
7. Document my Norway Trip
On July 18, I will be heading to Norway for a two-and-a-half week trip! I’ll attempt to document it through art-journaling, painting, drawing, and photography.
Well, this is definitely going to be a busy summer! I can’t wait. 😀
Very ambitious Tori J. When you start to post your mini comics I will repost them on my Graphic Novel Girl blog. I can’t wait for my copy of Solstice to arrive. I wish you could have autographed it for me. That would be awesome. At least when you become famous, I can say I followed your writing from the start.

I really can’t thank you enough for all of the positivity and kindness you give me. I feel so undeserving but I hope you know how much I appreciate it. I wish I could find a way to get you a signed copy, as a thank you.

Best wishes on the artistic endeavors – I’m a lifelong reader and I do hope you’ll stumble across the many fascinating, printed tales of others who’ve also undertaken the artistic journey, because in the world of literature its a splendidly documented experience … – JM

Nah. Always a pleasure. Is the trip leisure mostly or business? I’m asking because I’m trying to figure out how to go there and maybe teach english or spanish. Any info is appreciated.

It’s for leisure, so I don’t know how much help I’d be. I’m going to be visiting family in Burfjord. That’s an interesting idea. What made you choose Norway?

I’m a huge geek on norse mythology so anything norse inherently attracts me. Norway in specific, because my favorite author is Norwegian. Namely Jostein Gaarder ( he wrote Sophie’s World, my fav book ).
My other interests are Finland and Germany.
No worries! Well, I hope you have a blast! 😀

Norse mythology is pretty awesome 😀 I haven’t read any Gaarder but I’ll look into it! Thank you for the nice words. Have a great day 🙂

What genre of novel writing are you into? I just read some really good Heinlein. I had no idea he was that good.

I haven’t really found a genre I love the most, so far I’ve only completed writing one novel and it was fantasy. The other attempts have been sci-fi mostly. I’m looking to try writing general fiction though. I’ve never read any Heinlein but I’m going to look into it! What book did you read of his?

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. When I reserved it at the library, the librarian didn’t mention that last word of the title and gave me a look. It doesn’t mean what you think though. I had to look up many words while reading it. Once I skipped looking up a word, telling myself, it looked like a one-time word. But he kept using it. Eventually I looked that one up too.

That’s funny, I wonder what was going through his mind. After all, it’s a moon. XD Seems like you learned a lot of vocab, which is cool. I’ll probably have to use a dictionary also.

Her mind. It was a she. On a different occasion, I had to check the book out again. This time the librarian–again, a she–mumbled over the wrong words and said the mistress part clearly and a little loud. It was funny. It’s a sci-fi novel based in the future. So some of the words are new. There were also some Russian words.

It’s funny how awkward people act around that kind of thing. And that’s interesting that the book has Russian in it. Definitely going to check it out.

Oh, you speak Russian?

No, I don’t! I just figured maybe it was set in some sort of futuristic Russian dystopia or something XD

You’re not far off the mark. We do need Russians to get into space. Think about it.
